The cost of delayed action.
A lifestyle farmer was fined a little while ago for not calling a vet soon enough to treat a cow with advanced eye cancer. The court acknowledged the realities of farming but found that the delay led to the animal’s unnecessary suffering.
We see it time and time again—busy people who, for one reason or another, delayed calling the vet. Most farmers never come to MPI’s attention. But dead stock, skinny animals, or obviously sick livestock will attract the notice of an animal-conscious neighbour or member of the public.
What starts as a welfare concern can quickly turn into legal trouble. So what’s the lesson here?
