Top Tip #2: Limit What You Say

Writer: Ian RobertsonIan Robertson

It's easy to say too much to an MPI officer.

An expert explained it this way: "It can be intimidating when they turn up in uniforms, marked cars, and start asking you questions."

You may have every good intention in taking up the invitation to make a statement to the officer or turning up to an interview to "explain your side of the story." Of course, you want to be polite and helpful—BUT remember, appointed officers have a job to do, which includes collecting evidence of offending—so WHAT YOU SAY may be used AGAINST YOU.

AS SOON AS AN OFFICER STARTS READING YOU YOUR RIGHTS, the casual conversation has just gotten a lot more formal. And we routinely advise people: "DO NOT ACCEPT THE 'INVITATION' to attend a recorded interview without talking to us first."

You really don't want to be the person whose words make things way more difficult and costly for yourself.
